Musical Improv: Genre

Invent songs of the top of your head in a variety of styles and genres!

When we're improvising we never know what song will fit the scene, so it's best to come prepared. From opera, to blues, rap and beyond, our Musical Director will guide you through a variety of musical styles and how to successfully perform them.

Genre may seem tricky but even absolute beginners can make magic with improvised songs when they learn these simple methods. In this intro level class, Mark will guide you through the basics of improvised song, basic song craft and get you on your feet and singing.

We believe anyone can sing and our improv class requires no musical training!

The Mopco Musical Improv Fundamentals Wheel

Each of the four classes in the Musical Fundamentals Wheel offers focused work on some of the core tenets of improvised song. Just like working out at the gym, by focusing on these particular "muscle groups", students can enhance their understanding of improvisation. The four classes in the Musical Improv Fundamentals Wheel are Songcraft, Scene, Genre, and Games. These reflect basic skill areas that all musical improvisers will need, all using the same core principles. You can jump into the wheel at any point and you don't need to take them in any particular order.

Some improv experience and basic knowledge are helpful in making this class as rewarding as it can possibly be for students and their peers. If you do not have some basic improv knowledge before taking this class, we highly recommend you take a Musical Improv Essentials class or some basic improv course before taking any of the Fundamentals classes.

Performance

Each Improv Fundamentals and Musical Improv 6-Week course each has a unique performance element that showcases the skills you focused on during the class. You'll be able to show off to your friends and family everything you've learned. The performance is not mandatory but we bet you'll want to take part. Participation is dependant on consistent attendance. Students will receive two free tickets as part of their enrollment in the class. One ticket will be to attend the show after their performance and the other is to be used at the discretion of the student during the duration of the class.

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

18. We offer youth classes for younger improvisers! Check out our mopco.org/classes to find a class.

How active are these classes?

Our classes involve a good amount of physical activity - you should feel comfortable being on your feet for at least an hour. Please email hey@mopco.org with any questions about accommodations for ability.

Are there any prerequisites to this class?

We recommend students have some basic knowledge of improv before taking one of our fundamentals classes. If the student does not have any improv experience we would recommend taking our Musical Improv Essentials classes or have some previous experience with singing or improv (like our Improv 101 class). For those just looking to try it out with a lower commitment, our Monthly Improv Jams or Drop-In Class are another great way to dip your toe in the water in a low stress, celebratory environment.

I'd love to get more involved at the Mopco Improv Theatre. How can I do that?

As we grow, Mopco is focused on creating more opportunities for our students to become part of our little community. Currently, we offer a volunteer program that offers students the ability to earn credit toward seeing shows or reducing their class enrollment fees. Help in the cafe, check tickets and catch a free show to boot! For more info, shoot us an email at volunteer@mopco.org.

What is your policy on absences from class?

After two absences, students will not be able to participate in the performance at the end of the class.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Street parking is available on Union and N Jay street by our Theatre. Parking is available in the lot behind Perreca's as well as other public lots within a short walk of the theatre. The lot directly across from us is reserved for the Rossi & Ditorro Funeral Home and is not always available for parking. DO NOT park in the lot by JoJo’s Auto Service or you will be towed. Find out more and see a detailed map of parking options available around us here

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Contact us at hey@mopco.org for general inquiries or call us at (518) 577-6726

What's the refund policy?

Cancellations for a full refund must be made 7 days or more prior to the first class. Less than 7 days: Your place in the class is non-refundable unless we can get someone to fill your spot.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?
