Improv Fundamentals: Narrative
Class Dates: Mondays on June 10, 17, 24, July 1, 8, 15
Performance Date: Saturday, July 20th - 7:00pm
Improvisers are not only the actors on stage but the writers, too. This course focuses on what makes a strong, compelling story and gives you the skills necessary to create one on your feet, out loud, in front of an audience. Not just for improvisers, this course is great for writers and storytellers of all varieties!
Through improv exercises and exploring different methods of storytelling, students will learn to work collaboratively to create a coherent story collaboratively with their scene partners. The six-week class will culminate in a performance by the class here at the Mopco for friends and family to attend before a Saturday night mainstage show.
The Mopco Improv Fundamentals Wheel
Each of the four classes in the Fundamentals Wheel offers focused work on some of the core tenets of improv. Just like working out at the gym, by focusing on these particular "muscle groups", students can enhance their understanding of improvisation. The four classes are Environment, Character, Narrative, and Scene. These reflect basic skill areas that good improv demands, all using the same core principles. You can jump into the wheel at any point and you don't need to take them in any particular order.
Some improv experience and basic knowledge are helpful in making this class as rewarding as it can possibly be for students and their peers. If you do not have some basic improv knowledge before taking this class, we recommend you take an Improv Essentials class or take Improv 101 before taking any of the Fundamentals classes.
Each Improv Fundamentals and Musical Improv 6-Week course each has a unique performance element that showcases the skills you focused on during the class. You'll be able to show off to your friends and family everything you've learned. The performance is not mandatory but we bet you'll want to take part. Participation is dependent on consistent attendance. Students will receive two free tickets as part of their enrollment in the class. One ticket will be to attend the show after their performance and the other is to be used at the discretion of the student during the duration of the class.
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
18. We offer youth classes for younger improvisers! Check out our mopco.org/classes to find a class.
How active are these classes?
Our classes can involve a good amount of physical activity but we can accommodate anyone who is looking to take a class. Our stage and theatre are both wheelchair accessible. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions about accommodations for ability.
Are there any prerequisites to this class?
We recommend students have some basic knowledge of improv before taking one of our fundamentals classes. If the student does not have any improv experience we would recommend taking our Improv 101 or Improv Essentials classes. For those just looking to try it out with a lower commitment, our Monthly Improv Jams are another great way to dip your toe in the water in a low stress, celebratory environment.
I'd love to get more involved at the Mopco Improv Theatre. How can I do that?
As we grow, Mopco is focused on creating more opportunities for our students to become part of our little community. Currently, we offer a volunteer program that offers students the ability to earn credit toward seeing shows or reducing their class enrollment fees. Help in the cafe, check tickets and catch a free show to boot! For more info, shoot us an email at email@example.com.
What is your policy on absences from class?
After two absences, students will not be able to participate in the performance at the end of the class.

The lot directly across from us is reserved for the Rossi & Ditorro Funeral Home and is not always available for parking. DO NOTpark in the lot by JoJo’s Auto Service or you will be towed.
