Basic Songwriting Workshop

  • The Mopco Improv Theatre 10 North Jay Street Schenectady, NY, 12305 United States (map)

Class Dates: July 9, 16, 23, 30

Instructor: Mark S. Meritt

Have you’ve thought about writing a song or have come up with an idea that would make a good song? Maybe you've already written a whole catalogue of songs and are looking to come back to some of the basics? Whatever the case might be, if you've got the motivation, this 4-week class will guide you through all you need to write a song. The Mopco Improv Theatre's Musical Director, Mark S. Meritt is here to demystify the often intimidating process of creating original songs.

From concept, to song structure, to lyrics and music, Mark will guide you in a fun and supportive environment. Students will leave the course with their own original song written for the instrument of their choosing.

Some basic musicianship on their instrument (guitar, piano, voice...) is required for this course. If you know a few chords, you'll be able to leave this class with a complete song. A keyboard will be availabe for students' use. Otherwise students will also need to bring their instrument with them to class. No previous experience writing songs is necessary.
