Musical Improv: Genre
Invent songs of the top of your head in a variety of styles and genres!
When we're improvising we never know what song will fit the scene, so it's best to come prepared. From opera, to blues, rap and beyond, our Musical Director will guide you through a variety of musical styles and how to successfully perform them.
Genre may seem tricky but even absolute beginners can make magic with improvised songs when they learn these simple methods. In this intro level class, Mark will guide you through the basics of improvised song, basic song craft and get you on your feet and singing.
We believe anyone can sing and our improv class requires no formal musical training! However we ask that you enter the fundamentals class with a little bit of knowledge under your belt before you try out more focused study. Before enrolling in a Musical Fundamentals class we think it best to enroll in our 2-Week Musical Essentials class or some equivalent from another improv training program. Feel free to email us with any question
Each Improv Fundamentals and Musical Improv 6-Week course each has a unique performance element that showcases the skills you focused on during the class. You'll be able to show off to your friends and family everything you've learned. The performance is not mandatory but we bet you'll want to take part. Participation is dependent on consistent attendance.
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
18. We offer youth classes for younger improvisers! Check out our mopco.org/classes to find a class.
How active are these classes?
Our classes can involve a good amount of physical activity but we can adjust to meet the needs of any performer. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions about accommodations for ability.
Are there any prerequisites to this class?
We recommend students have some experience with musical improv before taking one of our fundamentals classes. Knowing the basics helps students jump into richer material. If the student does not have any improv experience we would recommend taking our Musical Improv Essentials classes or have some previous experience with musical improv. For those just looking to try it out with a lower commitment, our Monthly Improv Jams or Drop-In Class are another great way to dip your toe in the water in a low stress, celebratory environment.
I’m feeling nervous about coming to my class. Should I still come?
Yes! Introverts and extroverts alike get nervous before their first class. The good news is everyone in the class is here to grow and celebrate creativity. We work to create a trusting and safe environment for our students to explore improvisation. You don’t need any special skills to do improv and we work to make that clear right at the top of class with games and exercises that show you how creative you already are. Your teacher won’t put you on the spot or make you doing anything before you’re ready.
What is your policy on absences from class?
After two absences, students will not be able to participate in the performance at the end of the class.
What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Street parking is available on Union and N Jay street by our Theatre. Parking is available in the lot behind Pereca's as well as other public lots within a short walk of the theatre. The lot directly across from us is reserved for the Rossi & Ditorro Funeral Home and is not always available for parking. DO NOT park in the lot by JoJo’s Auto Service or you will be towed. Find our more and see a detailed map of parking options available around us here
How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

What's the refund policy?

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?
Please make sure we know who to expect in class.
